Why does TV dominate our society?

Why is TV so important? Everyone has TV. Everyone, Apparantly. Because when anyone finds out we don't have TV, they begin to pity us and try to get us a tv. We have a tv, we just don't have tv, as in we don't have tv programing, no cable, dish, or anything. We use our TV for videos and dvds only.

This happened again last night at church as we were trying to explain our position for the hundreth time and like always, this is the point at which people look at us as if we have two heads and begin to wonder what is wrong with us that we don't have tv. I appreciate the lady offering us something she thinks we "need". I just don't appreciate the way we are made out to be completely insane for refusing the offer.

There is never a day that goes by that people don't ask me if I saw so'n'so on tv.

What people don't understand is for every minute they spend in front of the tv, your not spending that minute on something else, like teaching the kids to sew, or working in the garden, or dealing with animals with the kids, or riding bikes with the kids, or playing ball with the kids, or 15 other things people tell me all of the time they "just don't have the time for".

If people want to waste time on tv, that is their decision and that is fine with me but when I don't want to waste my time on tv, why does that make me an oddball as if I have lost my everloving mind? The answer is because tv dominates the society we live in. It practically rules it. That is just sad.

as someone who watches entirely too much tv :) i agree completely that it dominates our society. as i move into willow's older years, i can't just have it on in the background, b/c she will become a couch potato. and i don't want that. so i actually have to model the behavior i want her to have. grr. :) but i don't think you're an oddball for not "having" tv - kudos to you.

We have always watched too much tv. I think everyone does wiothout realizing it. This is not the first time we haven't had tv. We went 2 years without tv and when we got tv again, it made me dizy to watch it because I wasn't used to it. I am just glad we realized that we watch too much tv while the kids are still young enough that we can enjoy them and teach them things instead.
